The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County is a community-based adult education organization providing curriculum based programs such as adult basic education, English literacy instruction, High School Equivalency preparation, and US Citizenship tutoring. Our programs are taught by volunteer instructors with a wide variety of experience as professional educators.
literacy 101 - basic literacy
This is a one-on-one instructional program designed for students who cannot read, write, or compute information at a functional level, and need help with math whose primary language is English. Students are matched with tutors based on information provided from the student assessment. Once matched, the pair meets to improve basic education skills for about three hours each week with the schedule coordinated between the student and the instructor.
english as a second language
The ESL program emphasizes skill development in English reading, writing, and speaking. Classes are offered in morning, afternoon, and evening hours. Classes are grouped by levels 0 through 5. Students progress through levels at their own pace and are re-assessed upon request based on the student’s needs.
high school equivalency
Students who have not earned a High School Diploma have the option of signing up for the GED, TASC, or HiSET Exam. Our High School Equivalency program provides an overview of these tests while specifically preparing students for the GED. GED classes meet two days per week to improve skills in English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science. Classes are offered at different levels based on students' incoming skills. Classes run for the full academic year.
united states citizenship
Citizenship classes are ideal for the student who is preparing to apply, or has recently applied, for U.S. citizenship. Classes focus on American History, Civics and US Government, and English language proficiency. The course also provides students with practice through mock interviews and preparation to take the US Citizenship Exam.
Basic computer Skills
Computer Lab courses teach basic technology skills: basic computer functions, Microsoft WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, including email and internet. A basic skills assessment is conducted for each individual to develop curriculum around the their needs.
