Opportunities

Whether you are interested in an on-going commitment, a seasonal opportunity, a one-day project, or a leadership opportunity, the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County has a variety of volunteer opportunities to suit your needs.

TUTOR volunteers

Volunteer tutors work with assigned students to teach courses in either Literacy 101 - Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), Basic Computer Skills, US Citizenship preparation, or GED preparation. Once trained and certified by the Literacy Council, all tutors maintain regular contact with the Program Team and report back with progress, successes, and challenges.

The Literacy Council provides a volunteer orientation for new volunteers using the instructional tools provided by the Literacy Council and supports volunteer tutors with on-going continuing education opportunities to keep abreast of trends and best practices in the field of adult education. Volunteer tutors are requested to commit to teaching twice per week for a minimum of one hour per class for the duration of an academic year which runs September through May. Tutors may request to teach their course either in-person or online.

office volunteers

Office volunteers assist volunteer tutors and staff with student enrollment, student registration, providing information on classes via phone or email, making copies, assembling student instructional materials, and greeting visitors to the Sugar Land campus.

EVENT volunteers

Event volunteers serve as a member of one of our special event committees and assist staff and board member with producing our annual events such as our August Open House, The Great Grown Up Spelling Bee held in September, Holidays Around the World held in December, and Reading Between the Wines held annually in March. Committee members assist with event planning including securing event sponsorships or auction items and other event logistics such as invitations, registration, and decorations.

leadership volunteers - board of directors, board Committees or Event Committees

The Board of Directors for the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County is made up of over 20 community leaders with a passion for adult literacy education. These leaders work with the Executive Director to help provide strategic direction for the organization by assisting with fundraising, promoting the organization, and advocating for the needs of the students we serve in the community.

Leadership volunteers serve either as members or officers on our Board of Directors, serve as Chairman of one of our Board Committees, or serve as a Co-Chair for one of our event committees. Leadership volunteers are supported in a variety of ways including orientation and training opportunities in order to be an effective advocate for adult literacy education programs in our community. Board members have three year terms renewable up to three terms while Board officers serve on our Executive Committee and are limited to one year terms per office. Board committees and Event committees have unlimited terms.
