Prospective Volunteers

IMMEDIATE VOLUNTEER TUTOR OPPORTUNITIES
The Literacy Council is actively recruiting Volunteer Tutors to provide online or in-person instruction for the following areas:

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) Levels 0-2

  • Basic Literacy for Reading, Writing and Math

  • High School Equivalency (GED & Pre-GED) for English-Language Arts or Social Studies

We are also looking for volunteer tutors at our other locations throughout Fort Bend County

Friends of North Richmond - Richmond

English in the Workplace Program - Tramontina USA - Sugar Land

Living Word Lutheran Church - Katy

Orientation and free training for online instruction provided.
No experience required.

Volunteer Tutor Snapshots are held on a monthly basis, in person at the Literacy Council - Sugar Land Campus

SPRING 2024 Volunteer Snapshots are on the THIRD TUESDAY of the Month, unless its a Holiday. (see Schedule below)

Office Volunteers

Adult Literacy Education Tutors

Office volunteers assist volunteer tutors and staff with student enrollment, student registration, providing information on classes via phone or email, making copies, assembling student instructional materials, and greeting visitors to the Sugar Land campus.  

Sample tasks:
     - Greeting students as they enter the building
     - Assisting with flow of traffic inside the building
     - Directing students to classrooms around the the building
     - Proctoring a literacy assessment
     - Copying, filing, shredding
     - Data entry

Volunteer tutors work with assigned students to teach an adult literacy class: Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), Basic Computer Skills, US Citizenship preparation, or GED preparation. Once trained and certified by the Literacy Council, all tutors maintain regular contact with the Program Team and report back with progress, successes, and challenges. 

The Literacy Council will provide orientation to curriculum and workshops on how to navigate the Zoom online platform to all volunteer tutors using the instructional tools provided by the Literacy Council.

Position Requirements: Minimum age 21 years & older.

Position Duration: A minimum of one academic semester.

Position Location: Choose from Sugar Land, Richmond, Rosenberg, or Katy locations.
